Evaluation: Q1

"In what ways goes your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?"

There are many aspects of the media product that has used conventions of real media products.

The camera work I used for the media product is an example of this. In our music video, I used a lot of panning with the camera for effect with the fast paced movement in our music video, creating an effective pace.
You can see this from 1:36

Such as my media product, It has also been used in real conventions such as the music video by Drake-Miss me from 0:51

I decided to use this style of camera work because it fitted in with the genre as it is fast paced. I think it worked really well by using a style from a real media product. It also bring the audience in with the music video because they're following the camera's movement which attracts the viewer.

From the original music video of the song we used, there are many camera techniques that we used which were similar. The genre we used was R'n'B, as you know the camera tends to focus on females due to the majority of the audience being male. This tends to focus on what she is wearing, using close ups of her assets that would appeal to males. They are seen more as subjects than objects as the camera "breaks" them up into pieces such as cutting the rest of their body just to focus on there chest, eyes, legs etc.
A typical R'n'B video that I found demonstrates this is the music video by Drake feat. Trey songz- Replacement girl. As you can see, the females represented in this video are seen more as accessories. And wearing outfits to keep the male viewer engaged.

However, I challenged the typical conventions an r'n'b music video as they tend to have connotations of soft porn. This music video still carries the attributes to an R'n'B video such as the close up of the watch as it shows wealth which is an important element to show in R'n'B music videos.
The outfits worn in the the music video still appeal to the male viewer although the females aren't "cut" up by just showing there assets but showing them as a whole as well as a performer. This is because this particular song is for a female viewer. As the song is titled "Hero" the artist is represented as a Independent, strong female therefore viewed as a subject instead of playing an object in the music video.
This music video is both appealing to male and females yet doesn't objectify the female played in the video through the use of camera.  Such as the real media product, it has also challenged the typical conventions played in R'n'B music videos.

Real media product                                      Our media product

As you can see, there is a scene that is used occasionally in R'n'B music videos. It is usually set outside on how the artist has met someone that then creates the story line between these two people and their relationship.

This influenced us to incorporate the same kind of scene in our own music video. The scene is simple yet effective on creating a relationship between one another in a short space of time. It linked very well with our studio scenes. In typical media products, I have learnt that the male is seen as the viewer  the female as the receiver. However the viewer is female, as she is the main artist therefore takes the lead which challenges the general media conventions.

We used a few jump cuts when editing our music video. Such as the above scene as well as the studio scene of Bobby's jacket and Amber gold featured with him.

This editing technique is used rarely but we developed this idea from how it is usually used such as in the music video by Ndubz demonstrating this from 0:27. We developed this style of editing by using a still shot and decreasing the saturation right after the jump cuts which worked effectively.

We also challenged real conventions of a real media product from the music video Superhero by Wretch 32.  As you can see it looks very similar to the screen shot below of our music video.

However in our music video we used jump cuts instead of using slow motion.

Another style I used that challenged the forms of typical R'n'B music videos Is the comic book scenes which are used at the start as well as the end of the music video.  It differs from the typical conventions which add something individual to the music video.

I found another R'n'b music video that adds animation although the animation style is different as well as the fact its a moving animation as my music video is just a change of one screen shot.

Bobby Valentino- Turn the page

We also challenged the conventions of real R'n'B music products by adding the AG logo, giving the artist an emblem the audience can remember her as well as giving the artist a heroic type character.

My ancillary products are very conventional for type of audience I want to attract which are 16-24 females who are into R'n'B. There are many Digipaks that influenced me from many R'n'B artist's covers.

Such as this real media front cover on the right, the artist covers most of the frame. This is when Rihanna just released her first single therefore the audience has to automatically recognise her. She is also wearing gold such as the artist in my own Digipak. This was a good product to get inspiration as to what photograph would be suitable.

Real media products of digipaks also helped me to challenge the design of my inside panels. As you can see I merged to pictures together which created a good effect. I kept the color scheme simple in comparison to the front panel.

Such as my own, a real Digipak also created some kind of merge effect with the inside panel. The colour scheme is also kept simple as well as using white text to stand out which is what I also did.

I wanted the text of my artists name to be bold yet match with the "Gold" in her name as well as her outfit. When looking for ideas I came across Keri Hilsons cover which made me attempt to try make my own version of the font. I think it worked very well as it stands out from the rest of the other texts. It's important for the artists name to be bigger and bolder than the rest of the text so customers can see It from a far distance, as well as the name of the song that the audience know them by.

I kept my advert simple by keeping the color scheme I used for my digipak so it would go well together. I used the normal conventions an advert should have to advertise the Album.

As you can see I used the same font for "New Album out now" as the artists name. The background is plain black which challenges the normal conventions of R'n'B adverts that tend to be more flashy and more effects added to capture the audience. I didn't want it to busy at the background because I wanted the Album cover to be the main focus of attention.

As you can see in this real media advert, the background is of the artist which highlights the redness of her hair. There are also more effects used such as the soft red border at the top and bottom of the advert.  I think the fact this artist isn't new but her hairstyle is, they based it more round this to engage viewers to the change. As my artist is up and coming, the only thing I could highlight was the gold theme through the use of the artist outfit, font and theme.

Even though this background is black, there is fancy effects used round her name, highlighting the cigarette she is holding. I think in comparison to the simple text of the tour details, It's a bit over the top.

My balance of colors and font used for my advert worked well. I also added the logo behind the tour listings which link well with the music video and inside panels.

Evaluation q3

Using the internet was a very important way of researching. It helped me easily access the many areas I needed in the stages of making my music video.

Final Digipack

I think the outcome of my digipack was successful. I tried to incorporate as much of the music video into the design as well as make use of a variety of colours but keep the main colours of gold purple and black.
I am particularly happy with the inside panels of the digipack. The use of overlaying as well as blending on Photoshop worked very well.

My final advert design

I think i managed to link the advert well with the digipack using the same font and colours. I also enlisted tour dates to make it seem professional and realistic.

Evaluation question 4 : Audience Feedback

After our music video was viewed on the big screen we asked other students what they thought about
our  music video. Most of the feedback was really positive and the audience noticed and appreciated
the amount of work we put in to finish with a well thought out and entertaining final video.
We made a video compilation of a few comments made by the other students that watched our
music video.

Digipack: Mockup

Here's my ideas for producing the Digipack. This will help me when making my digipack because i will be using these ideas I've written on my sketch.

Photos that you plan to use on your Digipak and Advertisment – include brief overview of reasons why they are in your shortlist (planning).

These are the pictures i wil be using for my digipack.
The two photographs at the top will be for the font and back. Suh as the musi video, it's a purple background which has relations to the musi video as well as what she i wearing. They are god photographs as they seem like the kind of photographstat will be used by an up and coming R'n'B artist.

The photographs belo will be used for the inside panels of the digipack. The clothes she is wearing is what she wore for one of the outside scenes in the music video.

Short-list of fonts, colours, layout and design ideas (planning)

Front cover idea
I want to use a close up of Amber Gold as she is an up and coming artist so the audience will able to recognise her easily. I wont be adding many effects on the front cover. I also want to us a gold font of her name, highlighting her artist name as well as standing out fromthe rest of the words.

Inside
I want to join the two panels with a fading effect on phototoshop. Also, to keep up with the comic theme in the music video, i will be using some comic book effects.

Colour scheme

We will be using the clours purple-matching the backgound she performed in the music video gold, white and black

Analysis of 3 advertisments (Research)

Such as our singer Amber Gold. Beyonce featured in this advert is wearing a gold top, matching with the font. The colour scheme is basic yet effective. With the important inforation in simple capital letters. They relate to the genre because this is advertising a well known r'n'b female artist. Also, her clothes and her apearence demonstrates the yound, trndy audiences that would be attractedby this such as our singer.

The colour scheme is red, highlighting her new change of hairstyle. The artists name and title o the album are the biggest. So the audience can read it from far. All of the font is the same which makes it seem professional. I like the fact the front cover goes very well with the advert. It relates to the r'n'b gnere because she is an r'n'b artist and such as our singer Amber Gold, she is pictured outside that doesn't seem urban yet from her well-known songs that are titled at the bottom of the advert. The audience are able to associate the singer very quickly.

Album cover analysis (Research)

[ashanticover.gif]

I decided to pick this album cover as one of my choices because i like the simplicity of the background as it as has a design matching the font of the artsist name which i could use for my digipack cover. Such as the artist in my music video, she is wearing gold so i could use the same kind of colour scheme. I think as an up and coming artist, i would use a closer photo of the artist to make it more recognisible tot he viewer.

This artist is also wearing gold but has a black ground which i think is effective as it focuses on the artist more as well as contrasts with the gold color scheme. The writing is bold and clear which is also something i may do.

I like the text in this CD cover as it has the whole glow effect to it. Also it makes a good contrast with the purple background which is the same color i'll be using fr my front cover of my digipack.

All of these front covers relate to the genre as they are all r'n'b vocalists as well as female. They also attract the same kind of audience that our singer attracts. Also from the clothes they are all wearing, especially the last front cover, are clothes that appeal to the target market.

Analysis of rough cut sequence

As you can see we haven't changed all of the green screen sequences, we plan to make them either different color or keep one color throughout the video.

Feedback of rough cut

Overall we managed to edit a lot, including a lot of transitions and quick cuts form the start. The majority of the video is filmed in front of a green screen, we plan to add colors to the green screen background. We also plan to fill in the gaps that have been left in the rough cut as well as add the scenes from outside, preferably at the bridge of the song. We have many changes to make but overall i think we managed to produce the music video very well, using quick editing to effect.
