Something I thought to add in to the video

I came up with this idea to add a comic book effects to our music video, I used photoshop to create the comic book effect and just lined up the video and the picture with the effect that I had created.

Animatic

Animatic for music video

This is the animatic we made in demonstrating the type of frames we will be using when shooting our music video. By making an animatic, we are able to have a stronger visual idea when filming our music video.

Contribution to pitch

This is our pitch we done we contributed a fair share of slides tot he overall pitch. By planning our music video it enable us to be more organised when filming the actual music video

analysis of student video

This is a students video from the previous year. I like the colour scheme of everything in the video being black and white appart from the red in the video. I also think it was a good idea to hold signs up. The change of location makes it interesting to watch. The performance of the artist is also very strong and the speed of the editing is in beat with the music.

Our final song choice is DaVinChe- 'Hero' Featuring Cleo Sol

Everyman in power has got a sure wife

Review: Student video (Research)

I found a music video that had an interesting approach to the song by Paramore called Fences.

I've chosen this music video because it's illustrative and I find the scenes they chose to film very effective. It demonstrates how effective scenes can be by keeping it simple. Even though it was a very illustrative music video, the effects were almost taken in an disjuncture type of way. But i found that the effects completed the whole atmosphere these students wanted to have as well as demonstrate to the audience. I think they reached their aim in showing across their ideas to the audience as it has more that 1 million views on youtube.
I hope to use many scenes such as how these students did yet be very effective.

Final song choice (Planning)

We decided to use the song DaVinche ft Cleo Sol-Hero

We were looking for an up beat urban song with a female singer. We thought this song would be the best choice to use because the lyrics are simple as well as the video so we are able to produce more ideas by ourseleves rather than use existing ones.

I have created a visual story board on how our music video will differ from the original.

Excellent Student video we found on youtube (Research)

When I saw this video I literally couldn't takes my eyes off the screen. It is a very complex and well edited student video. The song is not a genre that i particularly like but the music video made me look beyond that and appreciate the highly artistic and abstract work that had been done. The editing in this video is very fast and it has heaps of effects. The video was made with a different program to what we will be using but it still shows what you can make if you really think creatively and try to make your work stand out from everyone elses. This must've taken them a long time to film and edit and it shows you what you can accomplish if you spend a lot of time planning filming andediting your music video.

Shortlist of Pontenial Songs (Planning)

Before we decided on our shortlist of pontential songs for our music video, we had to decide what kind of video and genre we wanted to do. After discussing as a group we wanted to do a medium/fast paced song so that we could really play around with fast editing styles and produce a video that is very entertaining for the viewer. The genre that we thought would best suit this was RnB. We also wanted a song that wasn't widely known or heard by that many people but also a song that would be easy to listen to for a wide range of audience. I made a clip with our shortlist of songs which is below:

Why we decided on these songs:

J Warner - Reminiscing

J Warner is a rising artist from south east London. He has only released one or two songs so he hansn't really broken the mainstream barrier which is why he chose him. Additionally he is not signed to a record label and I also know him personally so it would be simple for us to gain permission to use his song.

Bluey Robinson - Gotta be a way
Bluey is also an upcoming artist from south east London that I know personally and we liked his unique style of music and this is one of the songs of his that we chose to do:

 We also Chose Pixie Lott - Cry me out
we felt that it was a song that we could easily illustrate with a video and it was a nice likeable song but the disadvantage was that it was a very well known song and it the audience would make a comparrison to the original.

Pixie Lott - Cry Me Out

Davinche ft Cleo Sol - Hero

We really liked this one when we heard it and quite a lot of ideas came to mind when i listened to it a few times. The song is not really known as well so it would be perfect to do our video with this song and its a good up tempo RnB song so we can really play around with a lot of editing techniques and camera angles.
 Davinche ft Cleo Sol - Hero

We also really liked Natalie May - Dumb it was quite an upbeat song as well that we can use a lot of editing styles with. It didnt have a video to it so we could really just start fresh and not need to make ours different to the original. Also it would be easy to get permission to use it because Camilla knows her manager.

Natalie May - Dumb

The last song we chose for our shortlist was Bluey Robinson - Showgirl
This was another song by Bluey that we really liked, it was a fun dancy' kind of song which we thought would be a good choice for a video and it also didn't have a video. we also found a similar song by the same artist that we also liked called "Give me a Sign"

Bluey Robinson - Showgirl

Bluey Robinson - Give Me a Sign

Examples ans analysis of videos that follow amplification, disjuncture and illustration (Research)

There are mainly three ways in which music videos work to support or promote the song. These are;
·ILLUSTRATION
· AMPLIFICATION
· DISJUNCTURE

ILLUSTRATION
-Music videos can illustrate lyrics and genre, providing a sometimes over literal set of images. This makes this the most straightforward technique and the classic example of visualisation, with everything in the music video directly related to the lyrics. The example below is R Kelly & Usher - Same Girl. This video is a brilliant example of an illustrative video as a visual link is made with the lyrics for example at 1:07 R Kelly's lyrics are: "her liscence plate says Angel, tattoo on her ankle" when that is said a car liscence plate with the word angel comes up on the screen and also it shows her tattoo on her ankle, the meanings are very literal and direct visuals are used to link the lyrics and the music video.

AMPLIFICATION
Amplification is a bit similar to disjuncture, it's when the music video doesn't directly link to the song and the lyrics arent illustrated through direct images in the video. It is more about enhancing the concept of the song and it's theoretical meanings. An example of a music video tthat uses amplification is: J Warner - Dream World, the song is linked to the concept of the video but it is not directly illustrated by images.

DISJUNCTURE
Disjuncture is when the music video has little or no connection with the lyrics. It can also be when the video and lyrics contradict each other. A good example of this is Franz Ferdinabd. His video has no connection with the lyrics.

Who was Vladimir Propp?

Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was a russian soviet formalist who analysed the basic plot elements of russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. After the initial situation is shown, tales takes the following sequence of 31 functions.
These functions are:

  1. ABSENTATION: A member of a family leaves the security of the home environment.
  2. INTERDICTION: . The hero is warned against some action (given an 'interdiction').
  3. VIOLATION of INTERDICTION. The interdiction is violated (villain enters the tale).
  4. RECONNAISSANCE: The villain makes an attempt at reconnaissance (either villain tries to find the children/jewels etc.; or intended victim questions the villain).
  5. DELIVERY: The villain gains information about the victim.
  6. TRICKERY: The villain attempts to deceive the victim to take possession of victim or victim's belongings (trickery; villain disguised, tries to win confidence of victim).
  7. COMPLICITY: Victim taken in by deception, unwittingly helping the enemy.
  8. VILLAINY or LACK: Villain causes harm/injury to family member (by abduction, theft of magical agent, spoiling crops, plunders in other forms, causes a disappearance, expels someone, casts spell on someone, substitutes child etc., comits murder, imprisons/detains someone, threatens forced marriage, provides nightly torments).
  9. MEDIATION: Misfortune or lack is made known, (hero is dispatched, hears call for help etc.)
  10. BEGINNING COUNTER-ACTION: Seeker agrees to, or decides upon counter-action.
  11. DEPARTURE: Hero leaves home;
  12. FIRST FUNCTION OF THE DONOR: Hero is tested, interrogated, attacked etc., preparing the way for his/her receiving magical agent or helper (donor);
  13. HERO'S REACTION: Hero reacts to actions of future donor (withstands/fails the test, frees captive, reconciles disputants, performs service, uses adversary's powers against him);
  14. RECEIPT OF A MAGICAL AGENT: Hero acquires use of a magical agent (directly transferred, located, purchased, prepared, spontaneously appears, eaten/drunk, help offered by other characters);
  15. GUIDANCE: Hero is transferred, delivered or led to whereabouts of an object of the search;
  16. STRUGGLE: Hero and villain join in direct combat;
  17. BRANDING: Hero is branded (wounded/marked, receives ring or scarf);
  18. VICTORY: Villain is defeated (killed in combat, defeated in contest, killed while asleep, banished);
  19. LIQUIDATION: Initial misfortune or lack is resolved (object of search distributed, spell broken, slain person revived, captive freed);
  20. RETURN: Hero returns;
  21. PURSUIT: Hero is pursued (pursuer tries to kill, eat, undermine the hero);
  22. RESCUE: Hero is rescued from pursuit (obstacles delay pursuer, hero hides or is hidden, hero transforms unrecognisably, hero saved from attempt on his/her life);
  23. UNRECOGNIZED ARRIVAL: Hero unrecognized, arrives home or in another country;
  24. UNFOUNDED CLAIMS: False hero presents unfounded claims;
  25. DIFFICULT TASK: Difficult task proposed to the hero (trial by ordeal, riddles, test of strength/endurance, other tasks);
  26. SOLUTION: Task is resolved;
  27. RECOGNITION: Hero is recognized (by mark, brand, or thing given to him/her);
  28. EXPOSURE: False hero or villain is exposed;
  29. TRANSFIGURATION: Hero is given a new appearance (is made whole, handsome, new garments etc.);
  30. PUNISHMENT: Villain is punished;
  31. WEDDING: Hero marries and ascends the throne (is rewarded/promoted).

Apart from these functions, he also concluded that all the characters can be put into 8 broad character types in the 100 tales that he analysed:

  1. The villain — struggles against the hero.
  2. The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.
  4. The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
  5. her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
  6. The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  7. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  8. False hero — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

A2 Media Studies - Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin felt that traditional narrative analyses don't apply to pop videos. His reasons were that pop videos revolve around songs and most of the time, songs don't have traditional narrative structures. He also felt this way because in pop videos, the singer can be both the narrator and a character. Another reason was that singers who are in the video look directly at the camera which makes them appear to involve the viewers at home.

Some videos are independent from the music they spring from. The visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning. Sometimes, the video gives visual pleasure which makes the video able to be repeated which then promotes the video. Sometimes, videos might be promoting films. This being said, there are three types of relations between songs and videos: Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.

Illustration: This is where the video tells the story of the lyric.

Kickstarts - Example

Amplification: occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

Sugababes -  Ugly

Disjuncture: This is where there is little connection between the lyrics and the video or where the video contradicts the lyric.

Love Lost - The Temper Trap
